Earth has a heartbeat,
Earth breaths,
Earth lives.

Earth is suffocating,
Earth is agonizing,
Earth is dying.

Gaia is the goddess of Earth, mother of all life.

As Gaia’s most prolific species, we Gaianas should be acting as preservers not eradicators of life.

This film tells the story of those who understand the ultimate duty of mankind. Because what we truly are extends far beyond humanity.

We stand at the cusp of the Anthropocene - the age where humanity now controls the destiny of our planet. Humans  have irreversibly altered Earth through industrialization, deforestation, pollution and global warming. If left unchecked, these impacts threaten all life on Earth.

Gaianas explores how technology, futurism and afrofuturism could help humans transition into capable custodians and caretakers of our living planet. We must use gene editing, precision agriculture and renewable energy to help species adapt to climate change. Robotic infrastructure could preserve threatened environments and help rebuild ecosystems we have destroyed.

The Gaianas approach sees humanity not as separate from nature, but as integral parts working together. Humans must become stewards of life itself, using technology in service of maintaining a thriving, balanced biosphere. Technology should self-organize in the interests of the planet and all its inhabitants.

This new vision of urbanization and planetary design calls for moving industry and pollution off-Earth, allowing the inhabited regions of our planet to remain natural  reserves. Humans would become planetary caretakers, adaptable nomads coexisting sustainably with the rest of life on Earth.

If we embrace our role as guides through the Anthropocene, we have the potential to leave behind a habitable, flourishing planet for future generations to inherit. Gaianas explores how afrofuturism, technology and human ingenuity could help achieve this vision of humanity as Gaia's helpers.

In Greek mythology Gaia (/ˈɡeɪə, ˈɡaɪə/) is the personification and goddess of Earth. She is the mother of all life.

In this film, Gaianas are people like you and me who chose to become custodians of all life.

This film is not about the doomsday secenario, but rather a look into the different ways humanity has been influencing all life on Earth for tens of thousands of years. How scientists are reengineering life to equip it with the means to survive us. This documentary tells the stories of people and communities who did not contribute to climate change but are the first to suffer its consequences.

Gaianas is how we name the heroes of the Anthropocene, those who have the courage to dial back and inspire others to act in the interests of all species. Director Val Lopes will take you on an eye-opening journey through Earth's present and life's future realities.
